One of the first questions people ask is, "How long should my table-runner be?" Well, there is no one hard-and-fast rule about this; it depends more on the look you would like to achieve, and also on how you use your table.
For instance, if you would like to use a tablerunner on your kitchen or dining room table, and would like to leave the runner in place during meals, you will want a runner that is short enough to leave room for your dishes and glassware. But if you plan to take the table runner off before setting the table, then you may choose any length you like.
"Should the runner hang over the ends of the table?" This is a matter of preference. Some people like the formal look of a tablerunner which drapes over the edges, some don't. One thing to keep in mind: if you will be using the table runner over a tablecloth, you definitely won't want the ends of the runner to hang down lower than the hem of the tablecloth.
"I've always seen tablerunners used along the length of the table. Are there any other ways to place them?" Yes, there are. You can put them across the width of the table (the smaller dimension), perhaps using a pair of placemats to either side of the runner, or you can even use two runners criss-crossing in the center. Be creative! Try something daring, such as the asymmetrical arrangement pictured above.
"If I use placemats, do I need a table-runner too?" Well, you certainly may, but depending on the size of your table you might not have room to use both at the same time! Or, consider using a table-runner with some, but not all, of your placemats. |
